The Carl Sandburg College women’s basketball team put up a strong fight against nationally ranked South Suburban, but the Bulldogs pulled away in the fourth quarter to defeat the Chargers 74-61 on Saturday in the semifinals of the Region IV District L tournament.
The loss snapped a five-game win streak for the third-seed Chargers, who end their season 14-14. Second-seeded South Suburban (27-5), ranked 13th in the country, advances to face top-seeded Triton in next Saturday’s championship.
KEY MOMENTS
- Sandburg trailed just 47-45 entering the fourth quarter after Cora Neal (Monmouth, Ill./Monmouth-Roseville) found Sophie Whitford (Macomb, Ill./Macomb), but the Bulldogs rattled off nine straight points — the largest run of the game for either team — to open the final period.
- The Chargers were up 25-20 late in the second before South Suburban scored 11 of the next 13 for a 31-27 lead at halftime. A pair of free throws from Yasmarella Thompson at :36.5 of the first half gave the Bulldogs a lasting lead at 29-27, but they didn’t stretch their advantage to double digits until their run to open the fourth.
